ONLINE ACTIVISM
06.>>>>Second Sight
.(Guardian Unlimited: 30/10/2003)
Many people, myself included, believe such tools aren't appearing
as often
as they should or could. So, we are setting up an organisation
you might
think of as a charitable incubator for those who want to develop
software to
make society better, and who want to pay the bills while doing
it. We're
calling it MySociety.org.

07.>>>>BBC Offers Power to the People
.(Wired News: 31/10/2003)
The British Broadcasting Corporation has launched a sophisticated
activism
website that it hopes will get people more involved with their
communities
and provide tools to help them get government officials to address
their
concerns. The BBC, Great Britain's state-backed broadcaster,
put up a beta
version of iCan on Oct. 22. The website incorporates social
networking,
content publishing and campaign-organization tools to foment
civic
involvement. Call it Tribe.net meets MoveOn.org meets MeetUp.com.

E-VOTE
08.>>>>Computer-Enabled Democracy?
.(Technology Review: 31/10/2003)
What might happen when technology becomes more intertwined with
voting? The
question goes beyond the much discussed issue of whether to
adopt
computerized voting machines, says self-described "interaction
designer" and
futurist Jason Tester. Tester, who recently graduated from the
Interaction
Design Institute Ivrea in Italy, has come up with a creative
synthesis of
technology, design, and political science that examines technology's
potential impact on voting in the context of abysmal voter turnout
and
decreasing confidence in government.

09.>>>>Aussies Do It Right: E-Voting
.(Wired News: 03/11/2003)
While critics in the United States grow more concerned each
day about the
insecurity of electronic voting machines, Australians designed
a system two
years ago that addressed and eased most of those concerns: They
chose to
make the software running their system completely open to public
scrutiny.

10.>>>>E-Vote Software Leaked Online
.(Wired News: 29/10/2003)
Software used by an electronic voting system manufactured by
Sequoia Voting
Systems has been left unprotected on a publicly available server,
raising
concerns about the possibility of vote tampering in future elections.

.(eGovernment News: 31/10/2003)
The Italian Minister for Innovation and Technologies, Lucio

in Belgium
.(eGovernment News: 31/10/2003)
The increasing interest for open source software (OSS) among
public
administrations worldwide, and more particularly in Europe,
is leading some
political forces to propose legislation for making the use of
OSS-based
systems mandatory in public administrations. These proposals
have so far not
been adopted in any EU country, but the matter is still being
discussed in
some Member States.

15.>>>>Vietnam embracing open-source products
.(Mercury News: 30/10/2003)
Carefully, quietly, Vietnam is plotting another revolution.
This time its
foe is not a foreign army with a global reach, but a foreign
corporation
whose reach extends worldwide. ``We are trying step by step
to eliminate
Microsoft,'' said Nguyen Trung Quynh of Vietnam's Ministry of
Science and
Technology. Quynh and other government tech officials want Vietnam
to be on
the cutting edge of an international movement to embrace open-source
software -- products that can be downloaded from the Internet
for free and
perform the same tasks as Microsoft Windows or Office.

.(BBC NEWS: 03/11/2003)

18.>>>>Slap on the wrist for government websites
.(WhatPC?: 30/10/2003)
Many government websites, including the flagship UKonline, are
failing to
meet the public's needs, new research has claimed. A report
published today
by the Society of IT Management (Socitm) and charity Citizens
Advice
examined whether information on government sites could help
with the
problems most commonly reported to Citizens Advice Bureaux across
the UK.
